Don't despair: How to handle writer's block

I wrote a feature for The Open Notebook about the writer's block. I have to admit that the inspiration came from personal experience, both in academia and science communication. In reporting for this article I learnt many useful tips and information about writing, and also how science journalism is different from academic writing. Something that stuck to me is that in science journalism we are based on facts but we also need to provide with an appealing story, carefully crafted. This is fundamentally different than academic writing, where we are mostly reporting what we've found, without necessarily crafting an entertaining story (although, if you ask me, a good paper has implicitly or explicitly a great storyline).
